Animated files use the first frame. JPG fills transparent areas with white. PNG keeps transparency. HDR is saved as ordinary 8-bit color.

Why PNG for AVIF

AVIF images often come from websites, and many are graphics: icons, illustrations, product cutouts with transparent backgrounds. PNG keeps that transparency and saves the decoded pixels without another lossy pass.

PNG cannot recover detail the AVIF compression already dropped, and PNG files are larger. For photos you just want to share, AVIF to JPG is smaller.

How to convert AVIF to PNG

  1. Drop one or more .avif files into the zone.
  2. Wait a moment while each one is decoded on this device.
  3. Download the PNG files, or one ZIP.

Animated AVIF files become the first frame. HDR is saved as ordinary 8-bit color.

Why nothing is uploaded

The AVIF is decoded and the PNG is written in your browser. If the browser cannot read AVIF, a decoder bundled with this page does it on your device. No server sees the images. After that decoder has loaded, the page keeps working offline.

FAQ

Does AVIF to PNG keep transparency?

Yes. If the AVIF has an alpha channel, the PNG keeps it.

Is AVIF to PNG lossless?

PNG stores exactly what was decoded. It does not restore detail that AVIF compression already removed, and it does not add more loss.

Why is the PNG bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF uses strong compression. PNG is lossless, so it needs more space for the same pixels. For a smaller photo, use AVIF to JPG.

Can I do this on iPhone, Mac, or Windows?

Yes. It runs in Safari, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. If the browser cannot decode AVIF, this page loads a decoder that ships with the site. You do not install a Windows codec.

Will HDR AVIF images look the same?

PNG output is standard 8-bit color. HDR AVIF is tone-mapped as best the decoder can, so it may look flatter than the original.

What about animated AVIF?

You get a PNG of the first frame.
